Theme: Two Minute Drills— the Mini-Pitch

An elevator speech is "a short description of an idea, product or company that explains the concept in a way such that any listener can understand it in a short period of time. This description typically explains who the thing is for, what it does, why it is needed, and how it will get done." Join us on October 7th to hear elevator speeches or "mini-pitches" from three of our local companies: Marea (formerly Coven), Rinord, and HighPoint Ciderworks (formerly Solitude Ciderworks) will present their "what, why and how" to the audience, followed by Q&A. Please come support these entrepreneurs and learn how to perfect your own "mini-pitch."

Pitch Day Presenters Reap Rewards

The 8th annual Silicon Couloir Pitch Day (“like that shark show, Teton-style”) took place on Sept. 5th at the Center for the Arts. By all accounts, the 2019 version was perhaps the best-attended and most stimulating Pitch Day ever. The Panelist Grand Prize Award of $7,500, along with the Bob Arndt Community Character Award comprising $1,000 plus a coveted spot in the Silicon Couloir TEAMS mentor program, went to Powwater for their venture to sell reusable water bottles and cups to fund clean water projects around the globe. Tana Hoffman and Mountainist won the Audience Award, including $2,500 and six months of complimentary membership at the Silicon Couloir Cowork Space for her presentation on her goal to provide female outdoor enthusiasts with sporting equipment designed specifically for women.

Executive Director Gary Trauner remarked, “I could not be happier at how my first Pitch Day as Executive Director turned out – primarily due to the quality of the 6 entrepreneur finalists who presented their ventures to the public. The show is for and about them and they all stepped up in a big way!”

He went on to say that, “The feedback we received from the finalists has been overwhelmingly positive. Rob Torti of Authentag stated that doors had opened up for him since he presented; Mikey Franco of Franco Snowshapes said he got just what he wanted –'prospective orders for snowboards;' Tana Hoffman of Mountainist relayed that she has received interest from potential business partners as well as investors; Chris Dickey from Visably relayed that he had already conducted two follow-up angel investor meetings with more expected; Scott Fitzgerald of Buddy Pegs hit the road with a tailwind for his bike media company after the event; and Grand Prize winners Jack Hartpence and Ellie O’Neil of Powwater had too many product collaboration, angel investor and closed sales deals to list them all.

“Success at Pitch Day means success for our presenting ventures, as well as inspiring others in the audience and our region to engage their entrepreneurial spirit and turn ideas into action. I’d say based on those criteria, Pitch Day 2019 was an overwhelming success.” said Trauner. “I can’t wait to see what 2020 has to offer.”

Give'r to Launch Kickstarter for Mittens

Give'r announces a Kickstarter campaign for new mittens that follow the design of the 4-Season Gloves. The crowdfunding campaign will start on October 8th here. Founder Bubba Albrecht said the company wants 500 to 800 backers and hopes to distribute the mittens before winter kicks into high gear.

First-day backers will receive 40% off the eventual list price. There will be a limited quantity at that rate, then other tiers will have lower discounts.

Socially responsible drinkware biz wins big at Pitch Day

By Mark Wilcox

Wyoming Business Report

JACKSON — A drinkware business that gives water to communities in need with every sale won two of three awards at this year’s Pitch Day in Jackson.

Organizers refer to the event pitting local entrepreneurs against each other as “Shark Tank, Jackson Hole Style.” The event allows each of six businesses to vet their business model to a crowd of hundreds in the Center for the Arts and win awards including a cash pool of $11,000, coaching opportunities and six months of free rent at organizer Silicon Couloir’s co-work space.

After eight years, founders of the event said that this year’s competition to get in was the toughest they’ve seen with 13 highly qualified entrepreneurs attempting to get on stage.

Panelist Choice Award

Powwater, the drinkware company, earned the grand prize Panelist Choice Award with its young business model that generated $21,000 in revenue its first month and brought clean water to over 15,000 people. A group of six hand-selected judges ranging from bankers and capitalists to business owners and a representative of the Wyoming Business Council chose the winner of the award.

Powwater sells reusable bottles and powder-coat finished steel tumblers where 35 percent of proceeds provide chlorine filtration systems to schools in Kenya and Nigeria via Impact Water, and to financing UV Led water filtration systems in Bangladesh through Shishir Water.

The business model was incubated by Nobel Peace Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, and charity partners get vetted through his network, the company said.

“These solutions compound over time while achieving the high level of community development needed to operate sustainably,” the company wrote.

The Panelist Choice Award carries with it a $7,500 cash prize and is given to the most compelling business idea with the greatest likelihood of success and funding.

Audience Choice Award

The Audience Choice Award, which is selected by audience members who text in their favorite of six presenters, went to Mountainist. The company rents adventure gear like off-road and snowmobiling kits to women with the option to buy.

“For women who want to get into mountain sports, gear options fall into one of three categories: very expensive (new), designed for men (majority of gear available to rent or borrow)or unsafe (gear that is too big, or not the right gear for the job),” wrote founder Tana Hoffman in Pitch Day materials. “Beginners need a better way to access affordable gear.”

She said that women are the fastest-growing demographic for snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, off-road recreation and mountain biking. Even so, she claimed Mountainist is the first and only women-specific online gear rental service.

The Audience Choice Award carries a $2,500 cash prize as well as six months of access to Jackson’s co-work space managed by Silicon Couloir.

Bob Arndt Community Caretaker Award

Panelists also gave Powwater the Bob Arndt Community Caretaker Award for its socially responsible approach to business.

The $1,000 award comes with coaching through Silicon Couloir’s TEAMS Program, a mentorship program based on MIT’s Venture Mentor Services program. The award goes to the company that best embodies Silicon Couloir’s vision to align entrepreneurship and community with promotion of a diverse economy and healthy environment for current and future generations.

Other companies represented at Pitch Day 2019

Authentag: One of eight companies recognized by the U.S. as a company that can help pharmaceutical companies verify the legitimacy of their sales channels and products. By mandate, pharmaceutical companies must provide this by the end of the year. The company already has 200 companies using its applications, which use its patented platform of distributed blockchain ledgers to verify the origins of pharmaceuticals. The company expects revenue of $2.5 million in 2020.

Buddy Pegs: Founded by the former owner of a bike shop that became a Top 100 Bicycle Shop, Buddy Pegs made news when founder Scott Fitzgerald hit the road for an eight-month national tour to launch an early-childhood bike program. His company’s two children’s books have sold more than 20,000 copies, and Fitzgerald has brought in $360,000 of equity investments to get his newest venture off the ground.

Franco Snowshapes: Mikey Franco said his team builds the “most exclusive, bespoke and custom fit snowboards in the world.” The company sold 40 boards in 2018 with an average price of $2,500, but has amped its capacity to produce up to 300 boards a year. “Off the shelf snowboards are no longer adequate for the high net worth client,” Franco wrote in Pitch Day materials. “Mass-produced snowboards lack a personal, precise and experience-based process our customer is demanding.”

Visably: Founder Chris Dickey is bootstrapping Visibly after developing a successful PR agency where he noticed some serious problems. “Despite the fact that billions are spent on services to improve brand domain SEO ranking, it’s exceedingly rare to rank in the first page of search results for popular non-branded keywords,” Dickey wrote. His software as a service aims to measure, manage and create first-page brand visibility on the first page of search results with what he calls a first-to-market solution.

Chance Meetings is Monday September 9th—Women in Business: Challenges, Changes and Opportunities

MONTHLY CHANCE MEETINGS

SEPTEMBER 9TH, 2019 - 5-7 pm @ The Rose (50 West Broadway)

Sometimes all you need is the right connection and a little inspiration. Well, what are you waiting for? Come find both at our free monthly networking event. You never know...

Theme: Women in Business: Challenges, Changes and Opportunities

The notable successes and multiple challenges facing women entrepreneurs were recently noted in two reports—The 2018 State of Women-Owned Business Report by American Expresss and SCORE’s Megaphone of Main Street: Women’s Entrepreneurship, Spring 2018 report. According to the reports, the number of women-owned businesses has increased by 58 percent since 2007,  and women own four out of every ten businesses in the U.S. In 2017, 11.6 million U.S. businesses were women owned. These businesses employed nearly 9 million people and generated more than $1.7 trillion in revenue.

It’s irrefutable that women entrepreneurs are on the rise. However, despite these incredible achievements, women entrepreneurs face many challenges. Lack of funding is among the most commonly cited. Indeed, studies have shown that men are almost twice as likely as women to raise $100,000 or more in funding. Other obstacles include a lack of mentors, advisors, and general support systems.

Yet, despite the difficulties women business owners report high satisfaction with work, general well-being, and an appropriate work-life balance.

Join us as we explore these topics with four successful and inspiring local women entrepreneurs and business leaders: Clarene Law, Mary Kate Buckley, Ruth Ann Petroff, and Lindsay Linton Buk.

Clarene Law served 14 years in the Wyoming House of Representatives from 1991 - 2005. While serving she was Chairman of Travel, Recreation, Wildlife and Cultural Resources for 8 years, Chairman of Minerals, Business and Economic Development Committee for 4 years. Also while in office Clarene was a charter member of The Wyoming Business Council.

A sixty-year resident of Jackson, Wyoming, Clarene began her career as a bookkeeper for the Wort Hotel in 1960. She purchased the Antler Motel with her family in 1962, a 17-unit property. Today, the Laws own and manage 450 rooms across four primary properties. She attributes her success to her husband, children and dedicated loyal staff.

Awards:
SBA Small Business Person of the Year 1978
Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year 2 times
Real Estate Businessperson of the Year in Jackson
State of Wyoming Real Estate Person of the Year 2009

The Lifetime Achievement Award, Woman of Influence

Mary Kate Buckley was appointed President of the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (JHMR) by the Kemmerer Family, independent owners of the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (JHMR) effecive June 1st, 2018. Buckley had served on JHMR’s Board of Directors since 2014.

She was named a Nike Corporate Officer and led Nike’s brand and business in Latin America and Canada and the Bauer Hockey Company before moving to Amsterdam to lead Nike’s Apparel business in Europe, Middle East and Africa.  She is a Partner in Azienda Agricola Urlari, a premium boutique winery that she co-founded in Tuscany, Italy in 2004.

Buckley holds a bachelor of arts from the College of the Holy Cross and an MBA from Stern / NYU School of Business.  She has been a full-time resident of Teton Village, Wyoming since 2009 and notably, is a multi-year member of Jackson Hole’s 100 Day Club, achieved by skiing 100+ days at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in a ski season.

Ruth Ann Petroff grew up in Greeley, Colorado.   She worked for the Domino’s Pizza corporation before opening a franchise in Jackson in 1988, which she owned and operated for 18 years.   She now owns and manages Snake River Roasting Company in Jackson with her husband, Mark.

Ruth Ann was elected to the Wyoming legislature for three terms and served as Chairman of Travel, Recreation, Wildlife and Cultural Resources Committee and the Legislative Technology and Process Committee, and she co-chaired of the Wyoming Women’s Legislative Caucus.

Collectively, the series adds a strong, female voice to Wyoming’s cultural history, as well as the current media from the rural West today. NEWS AND NOTES

Congratulations to Powwater and Mountainist, 2019 Pitch Day Award Winners
Last Thursday night, nearly 300 people gathered for Pitch Day at the Center for the Arts to cheer on six passionate entrepreneurs as they pitched their businesses for cash prizes. Every presenter was articulate, concise, and well-prepared. Panelist Deborah Benton remarked that she has judged many big-city competitions and Silicon Couloir's Pitch Day was of the same caliber as competitions in major tech hubs.

Both the Panelists Choice Award and the Bob Arndt Community Caretaker Award went to Powwater, a social impact company that sells high-end water bottles and cups with 50% of profits directed to clean water projects around the globe. The prizes brought a total of $8,500 in cash and an opportunity to participate in TEAMS, Silicon Couloir's mentoring program.

“We are deeply appreciative of the Silicon Couloir team, the panelists, and our fellow contestants for a terrific night. Working with Silicon Couloir was a fantastic experience. The coaching was top notch, " says Powwater Co-Founder and presenter Jack Hartpence. "Winning pitch day was a monumental stride for our team. We believe firmly in the power of business to spark positive change, and it was validating to know that the panelists agreed."

True to our core values, we have pledged our Community Award prize money to invest in a water project in Bangladesh through our partner, Shishir. We are very proud to play a part in this community. And we are thrilled to continue our relationship with Silicon Couloir indefinitely through the TEAMS program!”

The audience choice award went to Mountainist, an online company that rents curated outdoor action sports apparel and protective gear to women. The Audience Choice Award carries a $2,500 cash prize as well as six months of access to The Cowork Space. Says Founder and presenter Tana Hoffman, "We were honored to be named the Audience Choice Award winner! After rehearsing for three weeks straight, the real win was being able to present Mountainist just as we had envisioned it. We told our story in 8 minutes, and from the comments we received, we know it resonated with people. The award was the icing on the cake. Thank you to everyone who came to support us! "

Thank you to everyone who helped make Pitch Day possible: our volunteer coaches and panelists, sponsors, audience, and of course, our wonderful presenters.

August Theme: "Business: Good for the Community Beyond Economic Impact" with Fred Keller

From Fred:
“I believe that the opportunity exists for business to be so much more than just an economic player in the community. Often the business model is to make money and then fulfill what many consider to be an opportunity or an obligation: do something nice for the community. But business leaders have some amazing skills honed through their daily work to make their businesses successful.  They are pretty savvy problem solvers, are energetic when it comes to getting things done, and are good at seeing the big picture."

"So the big question: what would it take for Jackson to have an even more positive change?”

Fred Keller is the Founder and Chair of Cascade Engineering, which he started in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1973. He believes that business has the unique opportunity to complement its efforts on financial performance with important work in the social and environmental arenas. He has emphasized the key role business can play in building financial, social and ecological capital, often through partnerships with government and community agencies. His innovative management approach and work in advancing sustainability are featured regularly in business and industry publications.

Fred has been a visiting lecturer at the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University since 2002 and is an Executive-in-Residence at the Center for Positive Organizations at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. He was formerly the board chair of the U.S. Department of Commerce Manufacturing Council and is a past chair and current member of the Board of Trustees for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Fred is also a trustee for the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation.

Quiet and camaraderie in coworking space

Shared office environment is budget-friendly, offers community, members say.

By Jennifer Dorsey

Faced with an Aug. 1 deadline for his memoir about being a paramedic in national parks, Kevin Grange needed a quiet spot where he could stay glued to his pages for long, uninterrupted stretches.

Normally the author (he’s written two other books) uses his second bedroom as an office. But with relatives coming for a summer visit, that option was off the table for a while.

5d2523485a079.image.jpg

His solution: a desk at The Cowork Space, upstairs at 140 E. Broadway, where individuals and businesses can rent a spot to work and share a kitchenette, high-speed internet, private phone booths, printing capabilities and a conference room.

“I need to devote eight to 10 hours a day when I’m not working at the fire department on the book,” said Grange, a firefighter and paramedic with Jackson Hole Fire/EMS. “The Cowork Space offers a place where you can go and have that dedicated space to work.”

For many of the people at the desks around him The Cowork Space is a year-round headquarters.

Justin Tatosian runs his engineering and consulting business, JTEC Inc., there. It’s home base for Phil Cameron’s Headwaters Consulting, whose primary client is Energy Conservation Works (he’s executive director). Their neighbors include people building code and operating growing companies like audio-tour producer TravelstorysGPS and supplements-maker Momentous.

“It’s a cool diversity of expertise and personalities,” Cameron said.

Michael Adams, the on-site host at The Cowork Space, described it as a younger crowd with a lot of mid to late Gen X’ers and quite a few millennials. You might on occasion hear a discussion about a great ski day or a new mountain bike, but in general everybody there is getting down to business.

“They’re incredibly work-driven,” Adams said. “They come in exceedingly focused.”

Grange wears headphones because he likes to listen to music while writing, but being in a group setting wouldn’t be a problem even without them.

“In the main space everyone’s pretty much silent,” he said. “Everyone’s there to work.”

Members say coworking space is cheaper than renting their own office and dealing with WiFi, utilities and furniture. It’s more efficient and less lonely than doing the job at home or in a coffee shop, and there’s a creative energy and camaraderie they wouldn’t find elsewhere (see sidebar).

Plus they just like the space at 140 E. Broadway. It’s on the second floor with a streamlined decor and lots of natural light. More than a few also mentioned that it’s across the street from Persephone Bakery.

About 40 people — individuals and small groups — “come here on a regular basis to do their thing,” Adams said. He has about 180 in his database.

“We’re month to month,” he said. “We get a few drop-in individuals in summer and winter who are here on vacation and need to do a day’s worth of work to catch up.”

But most Cowork Space regulars are people who have moved here, he said. They want the mountain town lifestyle and can work remotely, or they have created their own company.

“There are a few homegrown entrepreneurs,” Adams said.

The cowork operation on Broadway opened in 2014 under the name Spark Jackson Hole. At the time, Megan Beck, one of the founders, said the idea was that people work best when they work together.

“We did it specifically to have that community and collaboration that you often miss when you’re not working in an office,” she told the News&Guide in 2014.

The concept spread to Teton Valley, Idaho. In 2017 two businessmen opened Work Farm in Victor, and they plan to add a branch (see sidebar).

Last year Spark Jackson Hole changed hands, acquired by Silicon Couloir.

“As a nonprofit dedicated to nurturing entrepreneurs and early-stage business we believe that one of the stumbling blocks to success is actually having an appropriate physical space to do one’s work,” Executive Director Gary Trauner said in an email. “Startup incubators and accelerators around the country have learned that having a shared workspace without the long-term commitment and cost of lease or purchased office space is critical to early-stage success.”

Trauner co-founded the internet company OneWest.net and the dog food company Mulligan Stew. Both eventually required dedicated leased space. But a cowork space in their early days might have made it easier to “incubate ideas and move them along at a more rapid pace,” he said.

The Silicon Couloir acquisition, he said, was an “asset-based purchase.”

“The previous owners still own the business that sold the assets to Silicon Couloir,” he wrote.

The program is segregated on Silicon Couloir’s books so revenue and expenses can be tracked, but “it really is just another program that helps generate resources for the organization to support other programs and, of course, enhances the entrepreneurial ecosystem at the same time.”

Silicon Couloir recently expanded and soundproofed the conference room and added a huge flat-screen TV and Polycom SoundStation for teleconferencing.

“That’s super helpful,” Cameron said. “You can have an eight-person meeting comfortably in that room.”

When Spark’s name was changed to The Cowork Space the website was integrated into SiliconCouloir.com for online signups, membership payments and conference room reservations.

Other changes may come as Silicon Couloir assesses what members need.

“It’s nice and maintained and oriented toward the user,” Adams said. “In some places you’re on your own in a dank space.”

The cowork spaces on both sides of the Tetons are part of a growing global phenomenon that, according to the publication Coworking Resources, began in San Francisco in 2005. In a report on the industry’s growth, the publication estimated that 1,000 coworking spaces opened in the U.S. in 2018, out of total of nearly 2,200 openings worldwide.

“This year the coworking space market size is expected to reach 696 openings in the U.S., many of them in states and cities with budding startup cultures,” it said.

Adams said it isn’t surprising that Jackson Hole is one of the places where coworking spaces have popped up over the years.

“Ski towns tend to attract educated people,” he said.

“We have a great professional space that allows you access to the world, good people who are going to network professionally and recreationally,” he said. “It’s a good place to sit down and work and not be disturbed.”

Why members like a cowork environment

Everybody in a cowork space is working on something different, and that's a good thing.

In fact, it's one of the reasons people thrive in cowork spaces, according to a Harvard Business Review report.

"Unlike a traditional office, coworking spaces consist of members who work for a range of different companies, venues and projects," an article in the September 2015 issue said. "Because there is little direct competition of internal politics, they don't feel they have to put on a work persona to fit in." As a result, it said, they can "bring their whole selves to work."

Members of The Cowork Space in Jackson shared some of the reasons they like it there.

It's budget-friendly

The prices are easy on the wallet.

Full-time memberships start at $200 a month, with 24/7 access to the shared workspace and all amenities.

The monthly fee for a dedicated desk — yours only but in the shared space — is $275. A dedicated desk in a private office costs $550 to $600 a month. Day passes, for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., go for $35.

Justin Tatosian started JTEC Inc. at home in 2015 and has been at 140 E. Broadway since February 2018. He is in a private office with one employee.

"For the two of us to have a large space that had both workspace for the two of us and the conference space and the kitchenette and bathroom ... it's kind of a lot," he said. 'It's a big chunk of real estate that we really don't need."

That's also how Phil Cameron of Headwaters Consulting looks at it. He runs his business with a programs staff person and a summer intern.

"For an organization of our size we don't require a substantial footprint to function," he said. "It's absolutely more cost-effective than having our own office space on a lease."

Cameron worked out of Spark Jackson Hole (the original name) in the early days and returned several years ago.

"When I moved back over there I was the only individual with the company," he said. "As we've added staff capacity it has enabled us to do that without having to rent a new space."

Kevin Grange, a writer working on a book at The Cowork Space, explored the commercial market and found it pricey.

"I was looking to rent an office," he said. "At the Jackson prices it's anywhere from a $1,000 to $1,400 a month."

In contrast, at The Cowork Space "you can get a dedicated desk for $275 a month, which is probably what you'd spend at Picnic."

Better than home

There's something about heading out to work as opposed to walking from the kitchen or bedroom to another part of your home.

"Your house can be your biggest hobble," said Michael Adams, the on-site host at The Cowork Space. "Every little thing starts yelling at you to get your attention. You don't get as much done."

Heading to The Cowork Space "your mind and body know you're going to work," he said. "You stop at Persephone to get your muffin and coffee. Then you sit down and proceed with work."

Grange cited the idea of "going outside to go inward" philosophy of Maya Angelou, who wrote in hotel rooms.

“When you go to a place that's not your house you can inhabit the story you're writing," he said. The Cowork Space is "warm and welcoming but sterile in that way. You’re not reminded of yourself and your life. You immerse yourself in the characters you’re creating.”

Coffee shops are nice, but ...

Grange enjoys writing in coffee shops, but in the summer they are way too crowded, he said. There’s no guarantee he will find a seat — or peace and quiet.

“It’s just a parade of people I know all day, which is fun, but it’s hard to get the work done,” he said.

At The Cowork Space he sits at a dedicated desk "tucked away in the corner."

"There's desks that are more open — where you sit each day depends on who else is there," he said. The dedicated desk "costs a little more, but I can walk in, and the spot I prefer is ready and waiting for me."

Michael Adams, the on-site host at The Cowork Space, said the space's fiber-optic, high-speed internet connection beats anything a professional will find in a coffee shop.

"If you're struggling to upload a program, that's not functional for you," he said. "We have a strong internet connection, which is your connection to the world."

Camaraderie

Tatosian enjoys being able to chat with Cameron and other Cowork Space clients, especially because they aren't all engineers working on the same kinds of things he is.

"Day in and day out surrounded by a bunch of engineers ... they're not really known for their personalities," he said.

With his neighbors at The Cowork Space, he said, "it’s fun to talk about other lines of work. It's also interesting to see their business models and what they’re doing.”

“As a writer it can be a lonely profession,” Grange said. “In the CoWork Space you’re immersed with a bunch of other people going after dreams and working on stuff they're passionate about."

Cameron describes his business as being in the “festival seating” area, so he sees variety in the people working near him.

“I like the organic networking that happens there," he said. “Our random discussions around the coffee maker have actually turned into a sort of informal gathering that we invite other peers into the community once a month to talk about sustainability. That wouldn’t happen if we were off somewhere else on our own.”

If he expanded further, Cameron said, he’d rather upgrade his Cowork Space membership than hunt down office space and furniture.

“I might be able to find a great deal somewhere else, but then we’d be on an island,” Cameron said.

Meet the People Who Make Silicon Couloir a Success

A new feature of our monthly newsletter will be to share the stories and impacts Silicon Couloir has in the Teton region entrepreneurial ecosystem. This month, we will featureDavid Hopkins, TEAMS mentor and Trustee, and Bob Fuziak of Arms Reach Essentials, a thriving local company that creates deluxe organizers that securely keeps bedside essentials within arm's reach.

David Hopkins reflects on TEAMS:
"No budding entrepreneur need pine for a bigger stage than the one they have in Jackson, WY. The TEAMS program has attracted an experienced and diverse team of mentors from millennials to retirees and many ages in between. As mentors, we donate the benefit of all our business experiences, and the life lessons we have enjoyed, to the entrepreneurs accepted by the program. Equally important though, are the experiences we gain by listening to the amazing diversity of new business ideas from the entrepreneurs. A win-win for everyone."

David and his wife Debby moved to Jackson Hole from the San Francisco Bay Area in late 2017. Formerly president of a manufacturing firm and a consultant in several industries, David focuses on providing General Management, and Sales and Marketing services to aid firms through market, product, technology, and generational changes. Prior to running his own consulting firm David worked in the high technology and automotive industries, primarily in international marketing, for more than 30 years, and in banking prior to that.

Bob Fuziak on his Silicon Couloir experience:
"Silicon Couloir's programs have been fundamental in helping me develop my businesses. I graduated from The Start-Up Intensive in 2015 and I think it is an amazing program. The course materials can be applied not only the business you are working on during class, but all future projects and to your life."

"I was fortunate to be selected to Pitch Day twice for two different companies; Hind-Sight Industries (2015) and ArmsReach Essentials (2018). Pitch Day coaching sessions are tough. They take place over many weeks and each session has a different panel of experts. Sometimes you get conflicting advice, but it's good to have perspective from all angles. Ultimately it is up to the Founder, CEO, etc. to weigh the opinions and proceed how they think it's best for the company. This is true for the Pitch Day competition and also for the company decisions made after Pitch Day, based on the wealth of knowledge gained during the coaching sessions."

Arm's Reach Essentials has been so successful that they have sold thousands of Night Caddies and in 2018 sold out of stock 3 times in 6 months! Bob is also working with a firm to license Hind-Sight Industries' wearable technology patents.

On May 22nd approximately 140 community leaders, stakeholders, and involved citizens gathered for 22 in 21, a deep dive into the future of our community, to learn where we are headed and the challenges we face. By all accounts, it was another successful conference. Gary Trauner, Silicon Couloir ED, lead a panel on Education and Healthcare.

Theme: Wyoming Blockchain Taskforce- Progress and Innovations

Silicon Couloir and the Jackson Hole Blockchain Meetup present a special Chance Meeting on Monday, May 6th focused on Wyoming’s innovations in the blockchain and cryptocurrency spaces. We will discuss Wyoming’s recent blockchain legislation and have guests from the Wyoming Blockchain Task Force on hand to describe Wyoming’s strategy and answer any questions.

Wyoming is leading the nation with innovative blockchain legislation. Thanks to the efforts of the Wyoming Blockchain Task Force and our state government, Wyoming has now enacted a total of 13 blockchain-enabling laws, making it the only US state to provide a comprehensive, welcoming legal framework that enables blockchain technology to flourish, both for individuals and companies.

The changes that our lawmakers have recently passed or introduced as bills include defining three categories of digital assets and treating them as property; granting assets designated as virtual currencies the same legal status as money; authorizing banks to hold digital assets in custody; allowing corporations to issue certificate tokens that represent shares; and creating a regulatory fintech sandbox aimed at further diminishing any regulatory hurdles to industry startups.

CELEBRATION PLANNED FOR MAY 9TH FROM 5-7 PM

Last fall, Silicon Couloir established a physical location with the acquisition of Spark Jackson Hole, recently named as one of the top 50 cowork spaces in the country.  Ownership of a dynamic, affordable and creative cowork space where entrepreneurs can network is a perfect complement to Silicon Couloir programs and services.

Since the acquisition, Silicon Couloir staff and board of directors have been planning the integration of the business under the organization’s umbrella.  In early May, you will notice a change of signage from Spark Jackson Hole to The Cowork Space. As part of a larger Silicon Couloir website upgrade, the Spark website will be integrated into a new and improved Silicon Couloir website (siliconcouloir.com) with features such as online signup, membership payment, and conference room reservations.

In an effort to continue providing a high-quality workspace for members, significant upgrades have recently been made to the conference room.  The room has been increased by approximately 40% and soundproofed in order to accommodate larger company meetings. A 55" flat-screen TV and Polycom SoundStation have been added to improve teleconferencing.  More improvements are in the works to make the space as professional, efficient and welcoming as possible.

As always, members will enjoy reliable high-speed Internet, 24-7 access, printing capabilities, phone booths for private calls, and a kitchenette.  Day pass users can enjoy the space from 9 to 5 Monday through Friday. The Cowork Space is available for after-hours events to non-members for a fee.

"The Cowork Space is a vital aspect of the entrepreneurial community providing 24-7 affordable workspace for our hard-working members," says Executive Director Gary Trauner.  "Look for continued improvements in the design and function of the space in the near future.  We believe that inspired workspaces help us do our most inspiring work, and we will strive to make The Cowork Space a creative hub for the community "

Please join us on Thursday, May 9th from 5-7 pm for a community-wide rebranding celebration at The Cowork Space located at 140 East Broadway, Suite 25.  If you haven't met our new ED, Gary Trauner, this is a great opportunity to speak with him about his vision for the direction for Silicon Couloir.  If you are considering becoming a member, please stop in to tour the space. Submit your name at the event for a drawing of a free monthly membership and free day use passes.

In conjunction with The Cowork Space rebrand, Silicon Couloir is pleased to launch a brand new organization-wide website, which is more integrated and easier to navigate.  Silicon Couloir participants will appreciate the clear delineation of programs for entrepreneurs, volunteers, and supporters.

"As the organization evolves with more programs and services, it's crucial that our website provide clear avenues for the public to engage with Silicon Couloir whether you are an entrepreneur, an investor, or a volunteer, " says Marketing and Program Coordinator Rebecca Reimers. "Silicon Couloir has grown significantly in the past few years, and our new website reflects the expansion.”
